The film details the deteriorating state of an impoverished Gary neighborhood terrorized by a street gang called the Rebels. When the gang murders a local boy, it prompts the emergence of several individuals who grew up in the neighborhood: the "original" Rebels. (Wikipedia) While this movie was made long after the Blaxploitation heyday of the '70s, all the ingredients are here. Most of the '70s black action cinema stars make an appearance in the film, bringing back memories of sitting at the drive-in, or the neighborhood movie house, cheering, jeering, and throwing your popcorn at the screen.
If you're a fan of '70s blaxploitation, give "original Gangsta" a watch, it'll have you digging through your DVD collection, or searching Netflix for the original "classics" these icons appeared in. Fred Williamson Double Feature: Original Gangstas / Soda Cracker |
